The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles picked up a thrilling road win Thursday night. The Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Bears of Southwest Mississippi Community College by the score of 64-63.
The Lady Eagles fell behind 8-1 to start the game. But behind a pair of threes from Jordan Bell they were able to tie it at 18-18 at the end of the 1st quarter.
Halfway through the 2nd quarter DaKeyia Cooley made a key shot to give the Lady Eagles their first lead of the night. They were able to stretch the lead to as many as 7. The Lady Eagles took the lead, 32-29, into the half.
The 3rd quarter continued to see the game go back and forth. There were multiple lead changes all throughout the quarter. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the Lady Eagles trailed 46-45.
The Lady Eagles would retake the lead 49-46 early in the 4th quarter courtesy of another big three from Bell. But much like the rest of the game, both teams would swap the lead throughout the 4th quarter. With just under two minutes left and the Lady Eagles trailing by three Mariah Collins made a huge shot and drew the foul to send her to the line. Collins hit the free throw to tie the score at 57-57. Neither team was able to score over the last minute which sent the game into overtime.
The Lady Eagles got off to a quick start in overtime and jumped out to a 62-57 lead. The Lady Bears were able to cut the score to 64-63 with two minutes left. The Lady Eagles were able to make some huge defensive plays and hold on for the thrilling win.
Bell was the leading scorer for the night with 17 points. Cooley contributed 13 points, LaTonya Adams added 11 points, and Collins scored 10 points. Adams added 5 rebounds, while Collins had 5 assists.
With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 7-4 on the season. They will return to action Monday, January 14 at Graham Gymnasium. They will host Hinds Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
