The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles played their home opener Monday afternoon at Tommy McDonald Field. The Lady Eagles split the doubleheader with Bossier Parish Community College. The Lady Eagles won game one 8-3 and dropped game two 13-12.
The Lady Eagles got the scoring started in the third inning. The Lady Eagles took advantage of some good base running from Keirra Fair to get the first run on the board. The Lady Cavaliers threatened in the fourth. They got runners on second and third with two outs but Lady Eagles pitcher Kaitlyn Parrish was able to work out of the jam leaving the runners stranded.
The Lady Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Jaelynn Palmer came through with a two-out single to drive in Megan Lightcap bringing the lead to 2-0. The big shot of the inning came off the bat of Miracle Crosby. She cleared the bases with a two-run homer to give the Lady Eagles the 4-0 lead.
The Lady Cavaliers would respond with three runs in the top of the fifth to bring the score to 4-3. The Lady Eagles answered right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Aaliyah Jones had the big hit of the inning with a two-out two rbi double. The Lady Eagles took a 6-3 lead into the sixth inning.
The Lady Eagles added to the lead in the sixth. After two quick outs, Taylor Perilloux lined a single to right. This brought Fair to the plate. Fair responded by hitting a two-run inside the park homer to give the Lady Eagles the 8-3 lead.
Kaitlyn Parrish earned the win for the Lady Eagles. She went four and a third innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four. Megan Lightcap threw two and two-thirds innings in relief. Lightcap recorded the last eight outs to earn the save for the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Cavaliers got off to a quick start in game two. They scored three in the top of the first to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Eagles would get on the board in the bottom of the third. Crosby scored from second on a wild pitch to bring the score to 3-1 and Perriloux followed that up by scoring on the next wild pitch to bring it to 3-2.
The visiting Lady Cavaliers exploded for eight runs in the fourth to make it 11-2. The Lady Cavaliers added a run in the fifth to bring the score to 12-2.
The Lady Eagles battled back in the fifth. The Lady Eagles were able to bring four runs across the plate to bring the score to 12-6. After the Lady Cavaliers scored one in the top of the sixth the Lady Eagles responded with three in the bottom of the inning to make it 13-9. Heading into the bottom of the seventh trailing 13-9 the Lady Eagles fought back. Crosby hit a triple to drive in one and Perilloux followed with a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 13-11. A single from Fair followed by a double from Jackie Lahaie brought the Eagles within one run. The Lady Cavaliers got the final out to hold on to the 13-12 win.
With the split, the Lady Eagles improve to 2-4 on the season. The Lady Eagles will return to the field Thursday, February 28 at Bevill State Community College. The Lady Eagles will play a doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 12:00.
