18th Place finish for Lady Eagles at National Tournament
TYLER, TX - MCC Lady Eagle's tennis team finished 18th at the NJCAA National Tournament.
The Lady Eagles got off to a hot start on day one of the national tournament picking up 6 points. At #1 singles Ana Julissa De Mata, the 7th seed nationally, defeated Alexia Tapia of Jacksonville College 6-0,6-1. At #2 singles, Isabella Quintero, the 6th seed nationally, defeated Simona Karlsson of Eastern Florida State College 6-4, 6-3. At #1 doubles De Mata and Quintero make up the 8th-ranked doubles team in the country. They defeated the Iowa Central team of Luzmary Diaz-Castillo and Chiara Florenza 4-1.
At #3 singles Macey Hill fell to Mercer County CC's Gwen Guidice 1-6,0-6. At #4 singles Ruthie Storment fell to USC Sumpter's Natalia Diaz Sanches 2-6,4-6. After a bye round at #5 singles, Cali Grace Davis fell to Barton College's Carmen Lyons 4-6,4-6. At # 6 singles, Julia Blackledge lost to Colin CC's Margaryta Bugalenko 0-6,0-6.
At # 2 doubles, the team of Ruthie Storment and Cali Grace Davis fell to Mesa CC's team of Avounay Rossi and Taylor Wasson 4-6,2-6.
Day two brought three more wins for both ladies and three more points for the team as Ana Julissa De Mata defeated Guadalupe Tocci of Jones College 6-2,7-6, 6-2 to make it to the quarterfinal round. Isabella Quintero defeated Angelo Moreno of MS Gulf Coast CC 6-2,6-3 and advanced to the quarterfinal round. Together their doubles team defeated Clara Penido and Tshegofatso Tslang of Barton College 6-3,7-5.
In the quarterfinal round of the consolation brackets, Macey Hill fell to Taji Williams of Coastal Alabama 1-8, Ruthie Storment fell to Morane Valley's Aubree Schultz 2-8, and Cali Grace Davis fell to Sauk Valley's Madison Hubbs 4-8. Julia Blacklege dropped her round 2 consolation match to Wallace State's Lilly Brown 1-8.
In the quarterfinal round of the doubles consolation bracket, Davis and Storment fell to Iowa Central's Makenna Schaffner and Emma Semery 5-8.
On day three, Ana Julissa De Mata and Isabella Quintero lost their singles and doubles matches. De Mata fell to Sydney Stone of Tyler CC 2-6,1-6, and Quintero fell to Esmee Andresen of Hillsborough College 3-6,2-6. Together their doubles team fell to Esmee Andresen and Arina Gamretkaia of Hillsborough College 2-6,3-6.
The Lady Eagles ended the tournament with a total of 9 points and in 18th place.
