Eagles Earn First Conference Win with 85–64 Victory Over Mississippi Delta
MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Community College men's basketball team picked up its first MACCC win of the season Tuesday night, defeating Mississippi Delta Community College 85–64 inside Graham Gymnasium.
Meridian entered the matchup looking to break through in conference play and did just that in front of the home crowd. The Eagles jumped out quickly, opening the game on a 6–0 run and stretching the lead to 18–6 early in the contest.
Mississippi Delta responded with a push of its own, cutting into the deficit, but Meridian remained in control down the stretch of the first half. A buzzer-beating three-pointer by sophomore Ju'Juan Ray capped a strong close and sent the Eagles into the locker room with a 44–29 halftime lead.
The second half belonged to Meridian. The Eagles picked up right where they left off, building the advantage to as many as 24 points and controlling the tempo on both ends of the floor. Meridian continued to execute offensively and defensively, pulling away for the 85–64 victory over the Trojans.
Freshman Fred Motley led Meridian with 24 points, continuing his strong conference play. Sophomore DJ Johnson added 14 points, while freshman KJ Barnes chipped in 12 to round out the Eagles' balanced scoring effort.
Head Coach Clarence Weatherspoon was pleased to see his team break through in league play.
"It feels good to get that first conference win," Weatherspoon said. "There's still a lot of basketball left to play, but this was a nice win for our guys and something we can continue to build on."
With the win, Meridian moves to 9–10 overall and 1–2 in MACCC action. The Eagles will continue conference play Thursday night when they travel to Scooba, Miss., to take on East Mississippi Community College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
