Eagles Finish Fall Season Strong with Top-Three Finish at Bobcat Invitational
LAUREL, Miss. – The Meridian Community College men's golf team closed out its fall campaign this week with a solid performance at the Bobcat Invitational (MACCC Event #4), finishing tied for third in cold and challenging conditions at Laurel Country Club in Laurel.
The two-day event, held Monday and Tuesday, featured frigid morning temperatures in the 30s and steady winds that made scoring difficult for every team in the field. The top-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs claimed the team title at 58-over, while host Jones College finished second at 70-over. The Eagles carded a 75-over team total to tie for third with East Central Community College.
Meridian found themselves in fifth place after Monday's opening round, shooting 51-over as a team in the tough conditions. On Tuesday, the Eagles bounced back with a strong final round, firing 24-over as a team — the second-best team round of the day, trailing only Gulf Coast's 15-over finish.
Freshman Daniel Young led the Eagles individually, earning All-Tournament Team honors with a Top-10 finish at 16-over for the tournament. The medalist posted a 10-over total, underscoring the demanding nature of the course and the weather.
Head Coach Lance Strickland praised his team's perseverance and consistency throughout the fall season.
"It was tough out there for everyone, but our guys battled hard," Strickland said. "They've been consistent all fall, and I'm proud of the effort and focus they've shown every tournament. We'll use this momentum to get ready for the spring."
The finish caps a successful fall for Meridian, which included two runner-up finishes, one victory at the Northeast Invitational, and the recent top-three showing in Laurel.
The Eagles will now turn their attention to the spring season, with their full schedule to be announced later this year.
