Eagles Capture Chris Clark Invitational, Claim Back-to-Back Tournament Titles
PHILADELPHIA, Miss. — The Meridian Community College men's golf team continued its strong spring season by winning the Chris Clark Invitational (MACCC Event #6) at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club, securing its second consecutive tournament victory.
The Eagles made the short trip to Philadelphia, Miss., for the two-day tournament hosted by East Central Community College on March 2–3. Meridian teed off in round one with staggered start times around 10 a.m. and quickly positioned itself atop the leaderboard.
After the opening 18 holes, the Eagles held a four-stroke lead over Copiah-Lincoln, shooting 15-over as a team. Freshman Daniel Young led the charge for Meridian, finishing the first round tied atop the individual leaderboard after carding a 1-over round.
Meridian carried that momentum into the second and final round on Tuesday. Once again teeing off around 10 a.m. in staggered times, the Eagles posted an 11-over team score to pull away from the field and secure a nine-stroke victory.
Meridian finished the tournament at 26-over, while Mississippi Gulf Coast placed second at 35-over and Copiah-Lincoln finished third at 43-over.
Young captured low medalist honors for the tournament, shooting a 1-under round on day two to finish at even par overall. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by sophomore Dax Reaux, who finished the event at 6-over.
Head Coach Lance Strickland praised the continued competitiveness of his team throughout the season.
"Our guys have fought hard all year, and it's great to see them continue to finish on top in these conference events," Strickland said. "Gulf Coast has been a dominant program the last few years, so it's exciting to see our team competing at that level and getting these wins."
The Eagles will now turn their attention to their home course when they host the Lou Hart Invitational at Northwood Country Club in Meridian on March 23–24. The event will serve as MACCC Event #7, giving the Eagles another opportunity to compete for a conference title on their home turf.
