Young Claims Medalist Honors as No. 8 Eagles Finish Runner-Up at Lou Hart Invitational
MERIDIAN, Miss. — The No. 8 Meridian Community College men's golf team delivered a strong showing on its home course, finishing runner-up at the Lou Hart Invitational held Monday and Tuesday at Northwood Country Club.
The two-day event began with a noon tee-off under ideal conditions, with the Eagles positioning themselves near the top of the leaderboard early. After the opening 18 holes, Meridian sat in second place at 7-over par, just one stroke behind No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast. Jones College and Hinds were tied for third at 12-over.
Freshman Daniel Young paced the Eagles on day one, firing a 2-under 69 to sit in second place individually, trailing Gulf Coast's Jayden Owensby, who posted a 7-under round.
Day two brought a tightly contested finish, with Meridian, Gulf Coast, and Hinds all holding or sharing the lead at various points throughout the final round. In the end, Gulf Coast edged out the field to win the tournament at 9-over, while the Eagles finished just one stroke back at 10-over. Hinds placed third at 14-over.
The battle for low medalist honors came down to a playoff between Young and Owensby, who both finished the tournament at 4-under par. After matching scores on the first playoff hole, the duo returned to the 18th for a second time, where Young came out on top to secure individual medalist honors for the second consecutive tournament.
Sophomore Jace Duckworth also earned All-Tournament Team honors with a strong performance throughout the event.
Head Coach Lance Strickland praised his team's effort on their home course and highlighted Young's continued success.
"I'm proud of how our guys competed this week, especially on our home course," Strickland said. "Daniel has been outstanding, and to see him win back-to-back medalist honors says a lot about the work he's put in."
