MERIDIAN, Miss. – It was a night of fireworks at C.D. Smith Field on Tuesday as the Meridian Community College men's soccer team stormed back from a four-goal deficit to earn a thrilling 4-4 draw with Northeast Alabama.
The Mustangs silenced the home crowd early, striking in the 12th minute and adding two more quick goals in the 25th to take a commanding 3-0 lead into halftime. The visitors extended their advantage to 4-0 just five minutes into the second half, leaving the Eagles facing an uphill battle.
Sophomore Jason Guerrero led the charge back. He opened the scoring for MCC with a strike midway through the second half, then added another in the 64th minute to cut the deficit in half. With just seven minutes to play, Guerrero converted a penalty kick to complete his hat trick and bring the Eagles within one.
The final moments brought the loudest roar of the night. With just under a minute remaining, sophomore Brandon Brown buried the equalizer, sending the sideline into a frenzy and sealing the comeback. Players celebrated in the corner of the field, and head coach Diego Figueroa was met with hugs after the whistle.
The Eagles move to 1-0-1 on the season following the dramatic draw. MCC will be back in action Friday, Aug. 29, when they travel to Southern Union State for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
