Eagles Honor Sophomore Class with Dominant Sweep to Close Regular Season
MERIDIAN, Miss. — It was a perfect finish to the regular season and a memorable day for a special group of student-athletes as the Meridian Community College men's and women's tennis teams swept Holmes 9-0 on Sophomore Day at the Wanda McPhail Tennis Courts.
Both the Lady Eagles and Eagles controlled the courts from start to finish, sweeping the doubles and singles matches to close out the regular season in dominant fashion at the Citizens National Bank Sports Complex.
Following the matches, MCC honored 11 sophomores who have played a pivotal role in the program and made history as the first teams to compete on the brand new Wanda McPhail Tennis Courts.
Recognized for the Lady Eagles were Reine Akombo, Piper Collins, Daisi Kukuljan, Aleah McMullan, Elizabeth Shirley, and Michaela Mayerhoff.
On the men's side, Jared Escobar, Daniel Espin, Jack Tutor, Hayden Williams, and Gavin Robles were honored for their contributions to the program.
Head Coach Tavis Rieger reflected on the impact of this group and what they have meant to MCC Tennis.
"It's been a pleasure coaching this group," Rieger said. "They'll always be remembered as the first to play on these courts, and they've helped set the tone for what this program is about. We're thankful for their dedication and wish them nothing but the best moving forward."
The sophomore class leaves behind a lasting legacy, not only through their play on the court but by helping usher in a new era of MCC Tennis with the opening of the Wanda McPhail Tennis Courts.
The Lady Eagles have now concluded their spring season, while the men's team will shift its focus to postseason play. The Eagles will travel to Ellisville to compete in the Region 23 Tournament at Jones College, scheduled for April 16–18.
