MCC’s Chikomba Wins National Title; Eagles Soar at NJCAA Indoor National Championships
LUBBOCK, Texas – Meridian Community College's nationally ranked track & field teams delivered an impressive performance at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships, held March 7-8 in Lubbock, Texas. The Eagles' efforts were headlined by sophomore Tafadzwa Chikomba, who claimed the NJCAA National Title in the men's long jump with a school-record leap of 8.06 meters.
Day One – March 7
The first day of competition was highlighted by Chikomba's championship performance in the long jump, securing a national title for the Eagles. Freshman Khyion Lewis also had a strong showing in the event, placing 8th with a jump of 7.37 meters.
On the track, sophomore Jaci Summers made a statement in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash, qualifying for the finals with a personal-best time of 6.69 seconds. Meanwhile, in the high jump, freshman T.J. Autrey delivered a podium finish for MCC, clearing 2.09 meters to secure 3rd place.
Day Two – March 8
Summers carried his momentum into the finals, finishing 5th in the 60 meters with a time of 6.72 seconds and 6th in the 200 meters after clocking 21.32 seconds.
In the field events, Lewis continued to shine, placing 4th in the triple jump with a mark of 15.49 meters. Freshman Kane Hill also performed well in the event, finishing 10th with a jump of 14.85 meters. The women's 4x400 relay team closed out the meet with a 15th-place finish.
At the conclusion of the championship, MCC's men's team placed 9th overall, while the women finished 22nd, marking another strong showing for the Eagles on the national stage.
With the indoor season now behind them, MCC will shift its focus to the outdoor season, which kicks off on Friday, March 21, at the Mississippi State Bulldog Relays in Starkville, Mississippi. The Eagles will look to build on their indoor success and continue making strides throughout the spring.
