Hill Headlines Strong Showing for Eagles at Southern Miss Invitational
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The Meridian Community College men's and women's outdoor track & field teams turned in another solid weekend of competition, taking on more than 20 four-year and junior college programs at the Southern Miss Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The Eagles wasted no time making their presence felt, opening the meet Friday afternoon with a first-place finish in the men's triple jump. Sophomore Kane Hill dominated the field with a winning mark of 15.34 meters, outdistancing the competition by nearly half a meter.
Momentum carried into Saturday as Meridian continued to post strong finishes across multiple events.
J'Karius Gilbert led the way on the track with a second-place finish in the men's 110-meter hurdles, clocking in at 14.42. In the field events, T.J. Autrey placed third in the men's high jump with a clearance of 2.03 meters, tying three other competitors in a performance that matched the meet record.
Distance runner Clayton Phillips added to the Eagles' top finishes with a fifth-place finish in the men's 1500 meters, posting a time of 4:03.64, which also set a new meet record.
On the women's side, the 4x100-meter relay team turned in a strong performance, finishing fourth overall with a time of 47.84.
Additional strong performances included Kevonte Hutchinson, Zoey Harris, and Antoine Spillman, who all earned top-eight finishes in their respective events.
Head Coach Chip Gayden was pleased with his team's performance against a deep field of competition.
"It was great to see us come out and win an event right away," Gayden said. "That set the tone for the weekend. We competed well across the board against some strong competition."
