Eagles Power Past Delta in Road Sweep, Stay in Postseason Hunt
MOORHEAD, Miss. — Meridian Community College softball continued its late-season surge Friday, sweeping Mississippi Delta on the road with an 8-6 win in game one and a 17-6 run-rule victory in game two.
With the sweep, the Eagles improve to 27-22 overall and 13-11 in MACCC play, strengthening their position in the race for a postseason berth.
Game One – Late Push Secures Win
Meridian came out swinging, plating three runs in the first inning behind an RBI double from Mollie Mitchell and an RBI triple from Delaney Perry, her eighth of the season.
The Eagles extended the lead to 5-0 through three innings, highlighted by a solo home run from Charlee Smith, her first of the year.
Mississippi Delta answered with a rally, cutting the deficit to 5-3 in the third and eventually tying the game at 6-6 in the fifth after chipping away at the Eagles' lead.
Alex Layfield added a solo home run in the fourth, her 12th of the season, briefly giving Meridian breathing room.
With the game tied late, the Eagles delivered in the seventh. Allie Loftin launched a go-ahead solo home run, and Layfield followed with an RBI single to seal the 8-6 victory.
Meridian totaled 12 hits and eight RBIs in the opener.
In the circle, Hannah Capello started and pitched five innings, allowing six runs (three earned). Willa Simmons earned the win in relief, tossing two strong innings while allowing just one hit and no runs.
Game Two – Eagles Explode Early in Run-Rule Win
Game two saw Meridian's offense pick up right where it left off.
Layfield led off the game with her 13th home run of the season, sparking a six-run first inning that also featured a two-RBI double from Hannah Buckley.
The Eagles kept the pressure on in the second, scoring four more runs to extend the lead to 10-1.
In the third, Isabella White added a two-run home run, while Smith drove in another run to push the advantage to 13-1.
Mississippi Delta attempted another comeback, scoring four runs in the fourth, but Meridian responded once again.
The Eagles plated four runs in the fifth, highlighted by another home run from Loftin, to secure the 17-6 run-rule victory.
Meridian finished with 16 hits and 15 RBIs in game two.
Isabella White earned the win in the circle, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing five runs while striking out three. Chelsea Regan closed things out with 1.1 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Head Coach Brad Grinstead was pleased with his team's performance as the regular season winds down.
"We're playing with confidence right now and putting ourselves in a good position heading into the final stretch," Grinstead said. "It was a solid sweep on the road."
With just four games remaining, the Eagles return home for a key conference matchup Tuesday against Mississippi Gulf Coast at Tommy McDonald Field.
