Lady Eagles Stay Perfect with Home Win Over Wallace–Selma
MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Community College women's basketball team kept its early-season momentum rolling Wednesday night, defeating Wallace Community College–Selma 60–45 inside Graham Gymnasium to improve to 2–0 on the year.
Playing in front of a lively home crowd, the Lady Eagles picked up right where they left off in their opener, jumping out to an 8–0 run and stretching it to 13–1 to start the game. Meridian controlled the tempo early and closed the first quarter with a 20–10 lead.
The second quarter belonged entirely to Meridian. The Lady Eagles extended their lead to as many as 16 points and went into the locker room ahead 36–17 at the half.
The third quarter brought some resistance from the Lady Patriots, who opened with an 8–0 run as Meridian went scoreless until the four-minute mark. The Lady Eagles regrouped, however, and held a 47–28 advantage heading into the final period.
Meridian closed strong in the fourth, putting away Wallace–Selma for the 60–45 victory and remaining unbeaten to start the season.
Sophomore Terica Smith and freshman Marcionna Young led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 12 points apiece, while a balanced team effort kept the offense flowing all night.
Head Coach Jocelyn McGilberry praised her team's composure and fast start.
"I was really proud of how we came out and set the tone early," McGilberry said. "We're learning to play with consistency, and wins like this help build confidence for the games ahead."
The Lady Eagles will return to action Friday night when they host Delgado Community College at 5:30 p.m. to close out their three-game homestand in Graham Gymnasium.
