MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Community College women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season Wednesday afternoon, defeating Pensacola State 2-1 at C.D. Smith Field.
The Lady Eagles wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as sophomore Aracely Villafranca found the back of the net in the 4th minute to put MCC in front. Both teams then settled into the match, trading possessions and limiting scoring chances. At the half, Meridian held a 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, MCC doubled its lead when freshman Flo Rigby scored in the 65th minute to make it 2-0. Pensacola State pulled one back in the 82nd minute, but the Lady Eagles' defense held firm in the closing minutes to secure the victory.
Head Coach Mike Smith, now in his 13th season, was proud to see his team step up early in the year. "This was a great win for our team and an important way to get our first result in the win column," Smith said. "I liked the way we came out aggressive, and I was proud of how we finished strong to close it out."
With the win, Meridian improves to 1-0-1 on the season. The Lady Eagles will now hit the road for a pair of matches in Missouri, facing St. Charles Community College on Friday, Sept. 5, before meeting Mineral Area College on Saturday, Sept. 6.
