MERIDIAN, Miss. – Meridian Community College women's soccer picked up its first conference victory of the season Wednesday night in commanding fashion, defeating East Mississippi 5-1 at C.D. Smith Field during the team's "Pink Out" match honoring breast cancer survivors.
Wearing pink jerseys and playing in front of an energized home crowd, the Lady Eagles came out firing on all cylinders. Freshman Mira Storm opened the scoring in the 14th minute to give Meridian an early 1-0 lead. Storm, who was named NJCAA National Player of the Week last week, now has eight goals in her debut season.
Meridian continued to attack relentlessly throughout the first half. Sophomore Grace Wade extended the lead to 2-0 off an assist from Emma O'Brien, and freshman Flo Rigby added another goal—assisted by Aracely Villafranca—to make it 3-0 at the break.
Rigby carried her momentum into the second half, wasting no time adding her second goal of the match and later completing her hat trick against the Lions. The freshman now sits just one goal behind Storm with seven on the season.
East Mississippi's Magda Kluczniok broke up the shutout in the 78th minute, but by then, the Lady Eagles had firmly secured their first conference win of the year with a 5-1 victory.
Head Coach Mike Smith was proud of the team's performance and energy on such a meaningful night.
"Our girls came ready to play from the opening whistle," Smith said. "It was great to get that first conference win in front of our home fans, especially on a night where we were able to honor something bigger than the game."
The Lady Eagles (3-6-2, 1-5 MACCC) will look to keep their momentum going as they travel to Raymond on Friday to face Hinds in a 5 p.m. conference matchup.
