MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Community College women's soccer team is heading to the postseason. The Lady Eagles secured a spot in the Gulf South District Quarterfinals after battling to a 1-1 draw against East Central on Sophomore Night, wrapping up the regular season with a 6-7-3 overall record and 4-6-1 mark in MACCC play.
The result earned Meridian the No. 6 seed in the district playoffs, setting up a quarterfinal matchup against third-seeded Mississippi Gulf Coast this Friday at 7 p.m. at Bary Thrash Field in Perkinston, Miss.
Head Coach Mike Smith praised his team's perseverance and growth throughout the season.
"I'm really proud of how our team responded down the stretch," Smith said. "We had a tough start against some of the best teams in the country, but our players stayed together, worked hard, and earned their spot in the postseason. That says a lot about their character and commitment."
The Lady Eagles overcame a challenging start to conference play, dropping their first five MACCC matches—four of which came against nationally ranked opponents—before turning their season around. MCC finished strong, winning four of its final six matches and earning the draw with East Central to clinch a postseason berth.
Meridian will now look to avenge a close 3-1 loss to Gulf Coast earlier this season when the teams met in September.
