Southwestern Illinois College
MERIDIAN, Miss. — The Meridian Community College baseball team stayed perfect on the young season, sweeping Southwestern Illinois College in a three-game weekend series at Scaggs Field to improve to 6-0. The Eagles scored 33 runs on 36 hits over the three contests, showcasing depth on the mound and power throughout the lineup.
Game One: McDaniel Powers The Eagles
Freshman left-hander Dan Sinclair made a strong first start in an Eagles uniform Friday night, going six innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and striking out eight to earn the win.
Meridian's offense backed him up early and often. Freshman Cambridge McDaniel launched two home runs, while freshman Tyler Johnson added another long ball. Chris Fox, Harlin Hovater, Nate Trochessett and Eli Swearingen each doubled as the Eagles pounded out 10 runs to take the opener 10-7.
Game Two: Meridian Bats Stay Hot
The bats stayed hot Saturday in a Valentine's Day doubleheader.
In game two, Meridian edged the Blue Storm 10-9 behind sophomore Vaiden "Moose" Ellis, who tossed 5.1 innings, striking out seven while allowing just one run.
Offensively, Fox homered and doubled, Graham Jackson added a double, Trochessett tripled and Johnson crushed one of the longest home runs seen at Scaggs Field, sending it into the parking lot. Southwestern Illinois mounted a late push, but the Eagles shut the door in the ninth to secure the victory.
Game Three: Meridian Sweeps In Run-Rule Fashion
Meridian closed the series in run-rule fashion, plating 13 runs in a 13-2 win.
Fox doubled again, Jack Scott added a double, and Trochessett collected his second triple of the day. Freshman Brayden Allen capped the offensive outburst with a home run off the videoboard.
On the mound, freshman Ridge Brown earned the win, working five innings with six strikeouts while allowing two runs.
Head coach Dillon Sudduth was pleased with the complete performance from his squad.
"I'm really proud of how our guys competed all weekend," Sudduth said. "We got strong outings on the mound, and offensively we were aggressive and productive. It was good to see some of our newer guys step in and contribute early in the season."
A fourth scheduled game against SWIC was canceled due to weather and travel concerns.
Meridian now turns its attention to a busy Tuesday at Scaggs Field, hosting Northwest and No. 2 Pearl River in a non-conference tri-match. Meridian will face Northwest at 11 a.m., Northwest and Pearl River will play at 2 p.m., and the Eagles will take on Pearl River at 5 p.m.
