GOODMAN, Miss. — Meridian Community College baseball battled to a split on the road Saturday against Holmes Community College, dropping game one 12-6 before bouncing back with a strong 6-1 win in game two.
With the split, the Eagles move to 18-19 overall and 5-13 in MACCC play.
Game One – Bulldogs Pull Away Late
Meridian came out swinging early, jumping to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Tyler Johnson delivered a two-RBI single.
Holmes answered quickly, scoring in the bottom of the first before taking control in the second with a two-run home run and an RBI single to go ahead 4-2.
Jacob Driver cut into the deficit in the third with a solo home run, making it 4-3.
The Bulldogs extended their lead in the fifth, plating three runs to go up 6-3, but the Eagles responded in the sixth inning. Chris Fox delivered a two-RBI double, and Johnson followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 6-6.
From there, Holmes pulled away late, scoring six runs across the seventh and eighth innings to secure the 12-6 victory.
Meridian finished with 10 hits and six RBIs in the opener. Driver started on the mound, going 1.2 innings, while five relievers followed in the loss.
Game Two – Sinclair Shines in Complete Game Effort
Game two told a different story, led by a dominant performance on the mound from Dan Sinclair.
Sinclair threw a complete game, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out seven batters to lead the Eagles to a 6-1 victory.
Meridian struck first once again, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double from Nate Trochessett.
The Eagles added another run in the third before Holmes scored its lone run of the game on a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning.
Meridian continued to build its lead, adding three more runs throughout the game to put it away at 6-1.
Head Coach Dillon Sudduth praised Sinclair's performance and his team's ability to respond after a tough opener.
"Dan was outstanding on the mound and gave us exactly what we needed," Sudduth said. "It's always good to come on the road in conference play and find a way to get a split."
