MERIDIAN, Miss. — Meridian Community College baseball closed out its 2025-26 season Thursday at Scaggs Field, earning a split with Northeast but falling just short of a postseason berth.
The Eagles claimed a 6-2 victory in game one before dropping the decisive 4-3 "win-and-in" finale, finishing the season at 24-23 overall and 11-17 in MACCC play.
Game One – Ellis Shines in Final Home Start
Meridian came out swinging in a must-win opener, collecting five straight hits to start the game and jumping out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
Both teams traded runs in the third before Northeast cut the deficit to 5-2 after four innings. The Eagles added an insurance run in the sixth and held on for the 6-2 win.
Sophomore Vaiden "Moose" Ellis delivered a standout performance in his final appearance at Scaggs Field, pitching 6.2 innings while allowing just five hits and two runs (one earned) with five strikeouts to earn the win.
Offensively, Jacob Driver led the charge early, driving in three runs in the first inning with a double. Meridian finished the game with 10 hits and five RBIs.
Game Two – Late Rally Comes Up Short
With a postseason spot on the line, game two turned into a tightly contested battle.
After three scoreless innings, Northeast broke through with two runs in the fourth. Meridian answered with a run in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Tigers responded with two more runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.
The Eagles made one final push in the seventh.
With two outs, Matthew McKinley delivered a clutch two-run home run to bring Meridian within one at 4-3 and ignite the home crowd. However, the rally ended just short as Northeast recorded the final out to secure the final postseason spot.
Dan Sinclair was credited with the loss, pitching three innings while allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Meridian turned to multiple relievers throughout the game.
Despite the outcome, the Eagles showed resilience throughout the day and the season, finishing above .500 and competing down to the final inning of the regular season.
