Lady Eagles Avenge Early-Season Loss, Defeat Northwest Shoals 3-1
MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Community College women's volleyball team earned a measure of redemption Tuesday night inside Graham Gymnasium, defeating Northwest Shoals Community College 3-1 in non-conference play. The victory came a month after the Patriots topped MCC in the Alabama/Mississippi Crossover.
The Lady Eagles wasted no time seizing momentum, racing out to a 12-6 lead in the opening set and extending the margin to 17-7 before cruising to a 25-12 win.
Set two proved more challenging, with the score tied at 5 early. Meridian trailed 10-7 at the first timeout but battled back to tie the frame at 15, 18, and 21. The Patriots held on late, however, edging out a 25-23 victory to even the match.
The third set was another back-and-forth contest, tied at 5 early and later at 20. MCC broke through down the stretch, closing strong for a 25-23 win to regain control of the match.
Meridian left no doubt in the fourth, jumping ahead 11-6 and stretching the lead to 20-10 before sealing the set 25-14 and the 3-1 victory.
Head Coach Alex Schimelpfening was pleased to see his team's improvement since the early-season meeting.
"Our players came out focused and ready to compete," Schimelpfening said. "It's great to see us learning from earlier matches and finishing strong at home."
The Lady Eagles have now won two of their last three matches and will look to keep the momentum going as they host Pearl River on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Graham Gymnasium.
