Lady Eagles Capture First Home Win of Season in Five-Set Victory
MERIDIAN, Miss. – The Meridian Community College women's volleyball team gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about Saturday inside Graham Gymnasium, rallying for a 3-2 win over United States Sports University to secure their first home victory of the 2025 season.
The opening set was tightly contested, with ties at 8, 14, and 19 before USSU pulled away late for a 25-22 win. Meridian responded in the second, building a 16-11 lead and cruising to a 25-17 victory to even the match.
USSU regained momentum in the third, controlling much of the set and claiming a 25-20 win to take a 2-1 match lead. Facing elimination, the Lady Eagles delivered under pressure in set four. MCC built a 17-9 advantage before holding off a late USSU rally to win 25-17 and force a decisive fifth set.
The Lady Eagles left no doubt in the finale, racing out to a commanding 10-3 lead and closing strong with a 15-6 victory to seal the match.
Head Coach Alex Schimelpfening was thrilled to notch the home win.
"It was great to get this one in front of our fans," Schimelpfening said. "Our team played with energy and confidence, especially in the fifth set. This is the kind of momentum we can build on."
The Lady Eagles will now face a busy week ahead with seven matches in five days. Next up, they travel to Booneville on Monday to face Northeast Mississippi in conference play. The two teams battled in a five-set thriller last week, setting the stage for another exciting matchup.
